Health Practitioner consultations

What Is a General Health Consultation?

A General Health Consultation is a flexible starting point for discussing your health concerns with an endorsed nurse practitioner.

At Pop’In Health & Recovery, we take a holistic and person-centred approach. This means looking beyond a single symptom to consider your physical health, mental wellbeing, current medicines, lifestyle, medical history, relationships, daily functioning, personal goals and any practical barriers affecting your care.

Your consultation may lead to advice, treatment planning, investigations, medication review, prescribing within scope, referral, follow-up or coordination with other health professionals where appropriate.

Health Concerns We Can Discuss

A General Health Consultation may include discussion and assessment of:

  • New or unexplained symptoms

  • Ongoing or recurring health concerns

  • Preventive healthcare and screening needs

  • Fatigue, low energy or sleep concerns

  • Headaches, dizziness or general discomfort

  • Digestive or bowel concerns

  • Respiratory symptoms

  • Minor infections and non-emergency illnesses

  • Blood pressure and cardiovascular risk factors

  • Weight and metabolic health

  • Women’s and men’s health concerns

  • Sexual and reproductive health

  • Menstrual, hormonal or menopause-related concerns

  • Skin rashes, spots, lesions or changes

  • Mental-health symptoms and emotional wellbeing

  • Stress, anxiety, low mood or reduced functioning

  • Medication effectiveness, side effects or interactions

  • Recent pathology, imaging or hospital results

  • Lifestyle, nutrition, movement and sleep

  • Preventive health planning

  • Requests for referrals, letters or medical certificates

This list is not exhaustive. You are welcome to raise any non-emergency health concern during your appointment. Our nurse practitioners will advise whether it can be appropriately addressed during the consultation or whether a more specialised or follow-up appointment is recommended.

A Holistic Approach to Your Health

Health concerns rarely occur in isolation.

A symptom may be influenced by physical health, mental wellbeing, medicines, sleep, nutrition, stress, relationships, housing, disability, employment, finances, access to services or previous healthcare experiences.

Our approach considers these broader factors while maintaining evidence-informed clinical care. The aim is not simply to address the immediate symptom, but to understand what may be contributing to the concern and identify practical next steps that support better long-term outcomes.

Our nurse practitioners may consider:

  • Your current symptoms and their impact

  • Your medical and mental-health history

  • Current and previous treatments

  • Medicines, supplements and possible interactions

  • Allergies and adverse reactions

  • Family health history

  • Recent pathology or investigations

  • Sleep, nutrition, movement and substance use

  • Stress and psychosocial factors

  • Daily functioning and support needs

  • Your preferences, concerns and treatment goals

  • Whether another practitioner or service should be involved

What Happens During the Consultation?

Our nurse practitioners will begin by discussing your symptoms, when they started, how they have changed, any previous treatment and how the concern is affecting your daily life.

They may review your relevant medical and mental-health history, current medicines and supplements, allergies, recent investigations and information from other treating practitioners.

Depending on your needs and whether the appointment is by telehealth or face-to-face, the consultation may include a physical or mental-health assessment, risk screening, review of observations and interpretation of available clinical information.

Our nurse practitioners will explain possible causes or diagnoses, involve you in deciding the next steps and develop an appropriate care plan. This may include monitoring, treatment, investigations, referrals, lifestyle strategies or follow-up.

You will also receive clear advice about what to monitor, when to seek further assistance and whether another appointment is required.

General Consultations and Other Appointment Types

A General Health Consultation is a suitable starting point when you are unsure which appointment type best matches your needs.

You can discuss concerns from any of the areas below during a general consultation. However, a more focused or longer appointment may be recommended when a concern requires detailed assessment or follow-up.

Women’s Health

For detailed women’s general, sexual, reproductive, hormonal, menstrual, contraceptive, preventive-health and menopause-related concerns.

Men’s Health

For detailed men’s general health, preventive health, mental health, sexual health and age-related concerns.

Mental Health

For comprehensive assessment of mental-health symptoms, functioning, risks, treatment history and care options.

Skin Health

For focused assessment of rashes, lesions, changing spots and other skin concerns.

Weight and Metabolic Health

For a detailed review of weight, metabolic risk factors, lifestyle, health history, monitoring needs and individual goals.

Medication Review

For a structured review of current medicines, previous treatment, effectiveness, side effects, interactions and monitoring needs.

Assessments, Diagnosis and Referrals

For more complex assessment, diagnostic reasoning, investigation planning and referral to appropriate health or specialist services.

Medical Certificate Assessment

For assessment of a health condition and its effect on work, study or usual activities.

Where a specialised appointment is required, our nurse practitioners may address the immediate concern and arrange an appropriate follow-up.

Working With Your Existing Healthcare Team

Pop’In Health & Recovery aims to complement your existing healthcare rather than unnecessarily duplicate or replace it.

We strongly encourage patients to maintain a relationship with a regular GP or general practice. You do not necessarily need to see the same GP at every appointment, but being connected with a regular practice can support continuity of care and access to your broader health record.

With your consent, our nurse practitioners may communicate relevant information to your nominated:

  • GP or general practice

  • Specialist

  • Psychologist

  • Pharmacist

  • Allied-health professional

  • Community or treating service

Information shared may include:

  • Consultation summaries

  • Investigation requests and results

  • Medication information

  • Referral information

  • Treatment recommendations

  • Follow-up requirements

  • Identified safety concerns

People who do not currently have a regular GP may still request an appointment. However, our nurse practitioners may recommend establishing care with a general practice, particularly where ongoing, complex or long-term medical care is required.

Connected Clinical and Recovery Support

Some people need more than clinical advice alone. They may also require practical help to organise appointments, communicate with providers, understand recommendations, establish routines or implement agreed strategies.

With your informed consent, our nurse practitioners may coordinate relevant aspects of care with Ben Turner and the Pop’In Health & Recovery recovery and NDIS service stream.

Ben may assist with:

  • Preparing for appointments

  • Organising questions and health information

  • Recovery and wellness planning

  • Developing routines and reminders

  • Understanding agreed recommendations

  • Communicating with service providers

  • NDIS plan implementation

  • Support Coordination

  • Psychosocial Recovery Coaching

  • Capacity Building and Skills Development

Our nurse practitioners remain independently responsible for clinical assessment, diagnosis, prescribing, investigations, referrals and treatment decisions.

Ben does not diagnose, prescribe medication or change clinical instructions.

You can access a General Health Consultation without using any recovery, coaching or NDIS service.

  • Some medical-certificate assessments

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I discuss more than one health concern?

Yes. You are welcome to raise more than one concern during your consultation. However, the available appointment time may limit how many issues can be safely and thoroughly assessed.

A longer appointment or follow-up consultation may be recommended.

Do I need a GP referral?

A GP referral is not required for most general nurse practitioner consultations.

However, we strongly encourage patients to maintain a relationship with a regular GP or general practice for continuity of care.

Can a nurse practitioner diagnose health conditions?

Yes. Our endorsed nurse practitioners can independently conduct health assessments, apply diagnostic reasoning and formulate diagnoses within their professional scope.

Can a nurse practitioner prescribe medication?

Our nurse practitioners may prescribe within their authorised scope when supported by an appropriate clinical assessment.

Prescribing, continuing or changing medication is not guaranteed.

Can a nurse practitioner request pathology or imaging?

Where clinically appropriate and eligible, our nurse practitioners may request relevant pathology, imaging or other diagnostic investigations.

They are also responsible for reviewing results and arranging appropriate follow-up.

Can a nurse practitioner refer me to a specialist?

Where appropriate and eligible, our nurse practitioners may refer patients to relevant specialists, consultant physicians, allied-health professionals and other healthcare services.

Can I book a general consultation for a mental-health concern?

Yes. Mental-health concerns can be discussed during a General Health Consultation.

A dedicated Mental Health Consultation may be recommended when a more comprehensive assessment, risk review or longer appointment is required.

Can I request a medical certificate?

Yes. You may request an assessment for a medical certificate.

A certificate will only be issued where it is supported by the clinical assessment. Medical certificates are not backdated.

What happens if my concern cannot be managed by the clinic?

Our nurse practitioners will explain why the concern cannot be safely or appropriately managed within our service.

Where possible, they will recommend a suitable GP, specialist, allied-health, urgent-care or emergency pathway.

Book a General Health Consultation

Book a General Health Consultation when you have a non-emergency health concern, need preventive-health advice or are unsure which appointment type is most suitable.

Where another consultation type would better meet your needs, the clinic may contact you before the appointment or recommend an appropriate follow-up.

Important Booking Notice

Booking and paying for a consultation covers the practitioner’s time, assessment and professional care.

It does not guarantee a prescription, certificate, referral, report, investigation or requested treatment outcome.
